In 1425, the Duke of Bedford, regent of France for England’s infant king, Henry VI, founded the University of Caen in Normandy. In 1642, the Battle of Edgehill in the English Civil War ended in a draw, with both armies suffering heavy casualties. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus in areas where the Union war effort was being obstructed. In 1915, the U.S. battleship Oklahoma was launched from the Union Iron Works in San Francisco. In 1942, the first battle of the World War II Battle of El Alamein in Egypt began between British and German forces.
