Arab Liberation Flag of 1952
Prior to the unification of Yemen, the southern region, known as the Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen, used the Arab Liberation Flag of 1952. This flag consisted of a sky-blue chevron with a red star on a white field.

Red-White-Black Striped Flag
The northern region, known as the Yemen Arab Republic, utilized a horizontally striped red-white-black national flag. Its width-to-length ratio was approximately 2 to 3.

Upon the reunification of North and South Yemen in 1990, the current flag was adopted. It symbolizes the unity and solidarity of the country and represents its Pan-Arab identity.
