Relive the Glory: Boston Celtics' 1985-86 Season

A Season of Dominance

The 1985-86 season marked the 40th year of the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Led by the legendary Larry Bird, the Celtics put together one of the most dominant campaigns in NBA history, finishing with a remarkable record of 67-15.

Historic Frontcourt

The Celtics boasted an unparalleled frontcourt that season, featuring the "Big Three" of Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. Bird, an all-around wizard, averaged 25.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game. McHale, known for his post-up game and physicality, chipped in with 21.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest. Parish, the defensive anchor, contributed 16.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game.

Unstoppable Offense

The Celtics' offense was a sight to behold. They led the league in scoring, averaging 115.4 points per game. Bird was unstoppable, shooting 52.8% from the field and 42.6% from three-point range. McHale and Parish were also efficient scorers, shooting 56.4% and 56.3%, respectively.

Defensive Stalwarts

Despite their offensive prowess, the Celtics were equally impressive on the defensive end. They allowed just 102.1 points per game, second only to the Philadelphia 76ers. Bird, McHale, and Parish formed an impenetrable wall in the paint, while point guard Dennis Johnson and shooting guard Danny Ainge provided outstanding perimeter defense.

NBA Domination

The Celtics' dominance extended to the playoffs. They swept the Washington Bullets in the first round before facing the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals. After falling behind 3-1, the Celtics rallied to win Game 5 in overtime and eventually take the series in seven games. In the NBA Finals, they faced the Houston Rockets, a team featuring Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. The Celtics won the series in six games, capturing their first NBA championship since 1984.

Legacy of Excellence

The 1985-86 season remains one of the greatest in Boston Celtics history. The team showcased a rare combination of talent, depth, and determination. Their dominance on both ends of the court set the standard for future NBA teams and cemented their legacy as one of the most legendary franchises in sports history.
